The Light in the Ruins – by Chris Bohjalian – independent book review – Historical Fiction (World War II, Italy)

With suspense and occasional terror, Bohjalian skillfully weaves the story of the retreating German army in the final days of World War II with a related murder mystery that takes place ten years later. Awarded four stars on Goodreads.

The author touches on fading Italian nobility, the different types of scars carried by survivors, the impossible choices people are forced to make in times if conflict, and the ways in which love can change us, for good or ill. A page turning read!

Along with Midwives, this is a second favorite book from this author.
